Studying 1-2 semesters abroad has become an important part of one’s professional education, especially in engineering. In the course of an advancing internationalization, future employers often demand international experience as an additional qualification improving not only one’s language skills but especially developing an exchange between different cultures as well as educational systems.
The Institute of Mechatronic Systems supports this exchange and through its contacts within and beyond Europe offers students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering to study abroad.
Depending on the destination it is possible to study 1-2 semesters within the ERASMUS program or to write an project/master/diploma thesis during a 3-6 months stay.
The different contacts are as follows, divided by type and region.

European Contacts / ERASMUS-Program
ERASMUS is the program of the European Union for transnational cooperation in education. The ERASMUS program offers to sponsor a stay abroad within one’s study curriculum for three to twelve months.
Further information can be found on the internet pages of the Leibniz Universität Hannover:
According to our experiences, only a small part of the available ERASMUS spots of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is occupied by students. Therefore, an application should definitely be considered.
Montpellier - France
In Montpellier a contact exists to the Laboratoire d'Informatique, de Robotique et de Microélectronique de Montpellier (LIRMM), which is a cross-faculty research facility of the Université Montpellier 2.
Between the LIRMM and the Institute of Mechatronic Systems exists an ERASMUS contract, every year enabling two students to study up to two semesters in Montpellier. Besides the contract it may be possible to arrange project/master/diploma theses at the LIRMM.
Paris - France
In Paris a contact exists to the Institut des Systèmes Intelligents et de Robotique (ISIR) at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC).
Between the UPMC and the Institute of Mechatronic Systems exists an ERASMUS contract, every year enabling two students to study up to two semesters in Paris. Besides the contract it may be possible to arrange project/master/diploma theses at the ISIR.
Barcelona - Spain
In Barcelona, there is an ERASMUS agreement between the Escola Tècnica Superior d 'Enginyeria Industrial de Barcelona and the Institute of Mechatronic Systems, which allows two students a year to study in Barcelona for up to two semesters.
Istanbul - Turkey
In Istanbul, there is an ERASMUS agreement between Kemerburgaz University and the Institute of Mechatronic Systems, which allows up to two students to study for one semester in Istanbul each year.
Contacts outside Europe
In addition to the mentioned ERASMUS contracts with European universities, the Institute of Mechatronic Systems maintains several contacts in countries outside Europe, through which we would be glad to organize stays for study related works.
Edmonton - Canada
Through a personal contact to Prof. Pierre Mertiny it is possible to write project/master/diploma theses at the Advanced Composite Materials Engineering Group (ACME) of the University of Alberta.
Possible Funding and Scholarships
To enable the stay at a foreign university for students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering the Dr. Jürgen und Irmgard-Ulderup-Stiftung grants 5-10 scholarships every year.
The scholarship is intended to support integrated studies or writing a project/master/diploma thesis abroad. After a personal application scholars are selected twice a year. The maximum period for funding is one year. Candidates should be enrolled in one of the main studies offered by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
